"Some things are just hard, but so often it’s the story we tell ourselves about them that does the real damage."

^ So true. I hear you on that feeling of being contracted and annoyed...I get that way when life things pile up or I take on too much. There seems to be no time or desire to feel for other people, and then we get stuck inside our own head with the untrue stories we tell ourselves.

It's the great paradox: the times when we feel the least open to being with others are the times we need them most. 💛 I think that's a valuable thing about Foster, the always-available group of like-minded people who are just a Discord message or Zoom call or Google Doc comment away. Being among other writers who "get it" can be a big help.

I love this! My next Substack edition is all about January and you touched on so many points that have been floating in my mind lately. The feeling of being crunched up into a ball is something I'm all too familiar with

Inspiring post, Sara! I've been feeling a bit down and confused at the start of this week (also dealing with an awful flu), and I need to start preparing my next newsletter issue which I've been putting off. Seems like I gotta cut the crap and get on that soon. Thank you for the reminder!

P.S.: "when you’re in a dark place it’s hard to believe you’ll ever feel good again, and the reverse is true as well", oh, I know so much about that. But I've never phrased it quite like this in my mind. You've captured the feeling concisely and beautifully. When you're in that dark place, knowing that some people are also dealing with what you're dealing with, though sad as heck, is also empowering. Solidarity is a powerful force. And this concept reminded me of something I've read earlier today, a post from Kristin Wong's newsletter Untranslatable. Here's a link to that, if you're interested: https://substack.com/inbox/post/100864149
